National Protection of Human Rights and the Rights of People of Determination

The College of Law and the Counseling and Happiness Center in cooperation with The Students’ Affairs at the University of Science and Technology of Fujairah (USTF) a workshop titled: National Protection of Human Rights and the Rights of People of Determination. The workshop was presented by Dr. Hawa Yousuf Ahmed Al-Ra’issy, Director of the Awareness Branch at the Department of Human Rights at the General Secretariat of His Highness Minister of Interior’s office. The Workshop started on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Conference Hall. The workshop was attended by a large group of faculty members, administrative staff, and students. Dr. Hawa Yousuf presented the concept of human rights, the UAE’s international obligations for promoting and protecting human rights and focused on the national protection of human rights within the legislative and institutional human rights protection frameworks. She also presented the rights of persons with disabilities (people of determination) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the purpose of the convention, the term persons with disabilities, the promotion, protection and ensuring that persons with disabilities fully enjoy human rights and basic liberties on a basis of equality with non-disabled persons. She also presented the general obligations of states parties to the CRPD, reports of states parties, including the initial report; as each state party submits a comprehensive report to the Committee, through the UN Secretary General, about the measures taken to implement its obligations under the CRPD as well as the progress made in this regard within two years from the date of coming into force for the state party. States parties also submit a periodic report every four years at least, and whenever is asked to submit a report by the Committee, the role of the Committee for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the UAE’s obligations under the CRPD, and the UAE’s national efforts in the promotion, protection, and empowerment of persons with disabilities. She also presented the efforts of the Ministry of Interior in the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities; its human rights strategy; and concluded the workshop by presenting the main achievements of the Ministry of Interior in the area of persons with disabilities (people of determination). Participants expressed that they benefited from the information presented at the workshop and the outstanding performance of the presenter.
